Graduation 2008

Nine D.C. High School students completed the 2008 China Challenge session and they were recognized at the August 4, 2008 ceremonies which was held at the John A. Wilson Building. The students presented a program consisting of Chinese conversation skits, poems, songs and a dialogue demonstrating their knowledge or the interdependency and sustainability issues regarding China. City council members, parents, relatives and friends were impressed with the creativity and proficiency of the students.

 


 

Philadelphia/New York Trip 2008

Our China Challenge 2008-2009 class studied Chinatown culture and community development in Philadelphia and New York City during a three-day educational tour July 28-30, 2008. Students learned about local community development efforts in Philadelphia Chinatown from Judge Ida Chen, the highest ranking elected Asian American in the city and Cecilia Yep, the founder of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (PCDC). They also had an ice cream social at Drexel University with Chinese students from the People's Republic of China to practice their language skills and learn about the university. In New York city, they participated in a traditional tea ceremony, visited the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, learned about the historical landmarks in NY Chinatown and visited the United Nations.

 


 

China Trip 2007

China Challenge 2006-2007 class went on 16-day educational tour of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Hong Kong) in the summer of 2007.  The history, culture, sights, sounds, smells, traffic and of course, the people were an unforgettable experience for the 10 students and the chaperones who went  on the tour. Each student recorded daily journals and shared some of their China insights in the summer 2007 newsletter. In addition to sightseeing, here are some of the educational highlights of the tour:

  • Seminar at the Shanghai office of the Washington-based law firm of Hogan & Hartson
  • Tours of the Shanghai and Beijing Urban Planning Museums which showed current and future developments in the city
  • Tours of the Summer 2008 Olympic stadium and village which were being constructed at the time
  • Visits with Chinese families to learn about their daily lives
  • Basketball game with students at the Jiaotong University in Xi'an
  • Visit to a public housing complex in Hong Kong
  • Seminar hosted by Marriott International executives at the firm's Shanghai headquarters
  • Sampling of regional Chinese cuisines  from noodles to Mongolian barbecue to an imperial lunch inside the Summer Palace
  • Tours of  jade, silk, and carpet factories
  • Amusement park in Hong Kong
